Horadam Watercolors, Limited Edition Lapis Lazuli
You Save: $5.80 (15%)
Lapis lazuli, a brilliant blue gemstone used in artist paints since the Middle Ages, is one of the rarest and most romantic pigments in the world. This precious stone was once the only way of obtaining ultramarine, which is the source of lapis lazuli's intense blue color. After German chemist Christian Gmelin published a new process for making synthetic ultramarine in 1828, genuine lapis lazuli largely vanished from the artist's studio.
Today, lapis lazuli is only mined in a few places in the world, and the pigment it yields is gradually becoming more expensive and more difficult to source in large quantities. So we are very grateful to our friends at Schmincke, the legendary German color house, for making this limited edition Horadam watercolor with genuine lapis lazuli. Schmincke has informed us that this is likely to be the last color they ever manufacture with lapis lazuli, so this limited edition marks the end of an era.
In addition to its historical significance, lapis lazuli is also a wonderfully unique pigment. We had never tried it before this color arrived in our shop, and although it is similar in hue to ultramarine, genuine lapis offers a completely different painting experience.
Lapis lazuli is more transparent and more unpredictable than synthetic ultramarine. The color, value, and opacity of this watercolor all vary widely within a single brushstroke, so every mark is complex and expressive. Lapis is also much glossier than synthetic ultramarine, with a luminous shine to remind you that this color is made from a gemstone.
This limited edition is part of Schmincke's professional-quality Horadam line, made with the same smooth, perfectly soluble binder as their standard colors. Lapis lazuli is naturally lightfast, and this tube is marked with Schmincke's maximum lightfastness rating.
Packaged in a 5 mL metal tube. Please note that genuine lapis lazuli tends to separate from its watercolor binder. Simply stir it with your brush if you notice any separation.
