About This Product
England was the leading manufacturer of dip pens from their invention through the mid-20th century. Much of the technology used to make pens in continental Europe, the United States, and Asia was originally exported from England—often by experienced English penmakers seeking their fortune in the rest of the world.
These seven steel pens represent the prime of the English steel pen age, with practical designs and carefully honed points, stamped from the finest steel the world had to offer at the time. Manufactured between 1910 and 1960, these vintage nibs have been recovered from unsold vintage stock, then individually examined by our experts for damage, rust, and defects. The vintage nibs we sell are only the ones we find in perfectly new condition, regardless of age.
The pens included in this set are:
Brandauer London School Pen ("Post Office"-style broad tip with winged body, stiff, with very high ink capacity.)
Perry Indent Pen 2300EF (Upturned medium point for quick, smooth writing; firm flex)
Neville Glydamonth Stub (Smooth "Relief"-style stub with chrome plating and medium width. Stiff, with line variation from directional change only)
Mitchell Education 0784 ("Post Office"-style broad tip, similar to London School Pen but made by a different historic manufacturer)
Perry Indent Pen 2301EF (Classic spoon pen with upturned tip. Very popular in its day and a very nice everyday writer)
Perry Balance Spring Pen ("Crown" pen with integrated spring and fine, flexible point)
Hughes Ajusto Stub (Very smooth upturned stub with bright gold finish.)
As with any dip pen, you will need to remove the factory coating before use so that ink will stick to the nib consistently. To remove the coating, simply dip your new pen in ink a couple of times and wipe it off. Repeat until the ink coats the nib completely and doesn't bead up. This process takes about 15 seconds and only needs to be done once, before you use the pen for the first time.
