Originally, the company used locally produced cotton rag in its paper; in the 19th century paper pulp was introduced. In the 20th century, the mill was destroyed (toward the end of World War II), rebuilt under new ownership, and combined with the stationery company Exacompta. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToday, Clairefontaine is part of a growing group of fine-art and stationery brands including Brause, Blockx, Stillman and Birn, and J. Herbin.
