Josef Albers
Interaction of Color: New Complete Edition
A luxurious two-volume edition with the complete original plates, text, and commentary
“Absolutely stunning.” — Felix Salmon, Reuters
Josef Albers’s masterwork, Interaction of Color, is one of the most influential books on color ever published. Originally issued in 1963 as a limited-edition set of commentary and 150 silkscreened color plates, the book introduced generations of students, artists, designers, and collectors to Albers’s unique approach to complex principles.
This beautiful edition brings the full power of Interaction back into classrooms and studios and onto bookshelves, where it will find an eager new audience. It replicates Albers’s revolutionary exercises, explaining concepts such as color relativity, "vibrating" and vanishing boundaries.
With the New Complete Edition, many of Albers' concepts are easier to understand because several pull-out cards and movable flaps have been added to the book. Typically, students of Interaction have had to craft these instructional tools themselves. Now they're built into the book as interactive, analog demonstrations of Albers' ideas.
One volume includes all the text on matte book paper, while the other includes all the plates on glossy white paper. You can consult the text while you use the plates — unlike with the paperback editions, which have to be photocopied or supplemented with paper cutouts.
Also included for the first time are studies from the Albers archive, produced by the artist’s students in the early 1960s. This celebration of Albers’s legendary achievements is an essential addition to any serious art library.
Published in association with the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation.
