About This Product
Made in Italy around 70 years ago, the LUS "X" Pen is an excellent bold writer and a lovely artifact of the dip pen era. Finished with a bronze alloy and hand-ground at the tip to partially reveal the steel core, the manufacture of these pens involved considerable skill and effort.
Calligraphers will quickly note that these old stub pens are smoother and less troublesome than modern alternatives, with a very consistent wide line and huge ink capacity. The nib has some flexibility, but line variation will mainly be accomplished through directional changes (as with all stub pens.)
Let's stop and stare at this pen for a moment—the slightest patina has developed over nearly a century of storage, creating a complex coloration that makes this pen feel very special. The gull-shaped vent hole is lovely and distinctive, and the very long tapered tip shows this manufacturer's consistency and finishing finesse.
Thanks to the protective coating applied to all dip pens (even new ones produced today), these pens are in excellent vintage condition. They've been checked for rust and other defects by our experts and are ready to return to service on your desk.
As with any dip pen, you will need to remove the protective coating so that ink will stick to the nib consistently. To remove the coating, simply dip your new pen in ink a couple of times and wipe it off. Repeat until the ink coats the nib completely and doesn't bead up. This process takes about 15 seconds and only needs to be done once, before you use the pen for the first time.
