About This Product
Our Vintage Stub Pens Set is a colorful collection of six vintage nibs, made between 1910 and 1950 in the U.S. and England. Stub nibs are the easiest type to use, since the line variation comes from a simple change of direction. When writing with a stub pen, vertical strokes are thicker and horizontal strokes are thinner, much like a chisel-tipped marker.
We've chosen six stub pens from the rich history of metal dip pens, all made during the early 20th century when these were essential tools in every office and school. The stub shape allowed professionals to draft documents with boldness and accuracy, regardless of whether they had perfect handwriting. That makes this shape a perfect choice for dip pen beginners!
The six nibs included are: Hinks, Wells #1872F Legal Pen (medium stub, blue finish); Turner & Harrison 15R (broad stub, steel finish); Esterbrook Blackstone #284 (broad stub, black finish); Hunt #38 Recorder (medium stub, steel finish); Esterbrook #939 Radio Pen (medium stub, chrome finish); and Esterbrook Relief #314 (medium stub, brass).
We estimate that these pens are 70-100 years old. Thanks to the protective coating applied to all dip pens (even new ones produced today), they are in excellent vintage condition. They've been checked for rust and other defects by our experts and are ready to return to service on your desk.
As with any dip pen, you will need to remove the protective coating so that ink will stick to the nib consistently. To remove the coating, simply dip your new pen in ink a couple of times and wipe it off. Repeat until the ink coats the nib completely and doesn't bead up. This process takes about 15 seconds and only needs to be done once, before you use the pen for the first time.
