This unique solvent for oil painting is distilled from a variety of the lavender family, not from pine resin like turpentine. It is somewhat weaker than turpentine and slower to evaporate. It's also more expensive than plain turpentine or modern odorless mineral spirits like Gamsol.
So why do artists use Spike Lavender Oil? First, it really smells like lavender, which can be a big studio upgrade for artists used to turpentine. It is less toxic and less irritating to skin and eyes than many other solvents. It also has a higher flash point than turpentine or petroleum distillates. That said, please keep in mind that this is still a strong solvent, and you should still follow the same safety precautions.
