- Tsunago Pencil Splicer
NJK is known for their pencil sharpeners, but Tsunago is more like a woodworking device than a sharpener (even though one of its steps does involve sharpening.) Let us explain: Tsunago allows you to splice two pencil stubs together, making them the length of a full pencil again, so you can get much more use out of each pencil. This is especially nice if you use more expensive pencils on a regular basis.
Here's how it works. First, use Tsunago's Step 1 hole to drill out the core of one pencil stub. The super sharp blade cuts evenly and leaves a smooth hole in the center of the pencil. Then, use the Step 2 hole to sharpen the other pencil to a narrow peg sized to fit in the hole you just drilled. Finally, use the Step 3 hole to remove stray wood from the peg so it'll fit perfectly.
When you're done, you can slide the two stubs together and start using your new Frankenpencil! You can use a little dab of wood glue to hold the pieces together more securely, but in our tests, we found that it isn't usually necessary because the peg and hole are precisely aligned. You can continue to sharpen and use the pencil past the seam, until you only have enough left to make another new hybrid with your Tsunago.
Not only is Tsunago efficient, in keeping with the Japanese concept of mottainai, or regret about waste, but it's also very fun to use. Tsunago invites you to create attractive and unique pencils out of what would have been thrown away.

About Nakajima Jukyudo Co. (NJK):
NJK, a third-generation family business in Osaka, Japan, does one thing impossibly well. They make pencil sharpeners with insanely sharp and consistent blades that produce better points, faster, with less breakage and friction. Their motto, "light as an apple peel, sharp as a Samurai sword," reflects the experience of gently twisting an NJK sharpener and watching long, continuous swirls of cedar peel gracefully from your pencil.
These simple, incredibly well-made products are the result of NJK's eighty years of history and their intense commitment to quality control. Although NJK makes Japan's best-selling sharpener, you'll still find the company's president on the factory floor, taking part in the delicate blade polishing process that makes these sharpeners special.
