Palmer #8 Pointed Pen Nib (Vintage)

The Palmer Method was more than a system of handwriting—it was the system, adopted by 80% of American schools at its peak in 1925. Today, though the Palmer Method has fallen out of favor in schools, much of the everyday cursive script used by English-language writers is still based on the letterforms and writing motions popularized by Palmer around the turn of the 20th century.

As the Palmer Method became the dominant way of writing cursive letters, A.N. Palmer & Co. built a multifaceted business that included educational materials, business education courses, and office supplies. These steel dip pens were marketed as part of the Palmer system, and would have been a common sight in schools and offices in the early 20th century.

The Palmer #8 nib is pointed, capable of nice, fine hairlines and soft enough for swooping calligraphic strokes. The large, fin-shaped side cuts give an unusual level of flexibility to this otherwise standard pointed pen, and the squished-oval vent hole gives it a unique look to match its distinctive feel.

Thanks to the protective coating applied to all dip pens (even new ones produced today), these 80-year-old pens are in excellent vintage condition. They've been checked for rust and other defects by our experts and are ready to return to service on your desk.

As with any dip pen, you will need to remove the protective coating so that ink will stick to the nib consistently. To remove the coating, simply dip your new pen in ink a couple of times and wipe it off. Repeat until the ink coats the nib completely and doesn't bead up. This process takes about 15 seconds and only needs to be done once, before you use the pen for the first time.
