Golden gesso is the professional's choice for priming canvas, wood panels, and other painting surfaces for use with acrylics or oil paint. Cheap gesso can be watery and inconsistent, but Golden makes their primers to the same high standard as their paints. The application process is buttery smooth, and the primer is highly opaque because it is generously pigmented. That also means you won't need as many coats as you would with cheap gesso. Once dry, Golden gesso is textured, so your paint adheres better to the canvas.
This is Golden's black gesso, which has the same excellent working characteristics as the white gesso but with the addition of black pigment for those who prefer to work from a dark surface.
