About This Product
An intriguing blend of French style and English steel, the Sommerville #750EF "Plume Gauloise" dip pen was made in Birmingham but intentionally looks and feels like the nibs that were popular in the Continent at the time. French writers preferred finer and more flexible pens than English writers did. The French companies used thinner steel with more extensive hand-grinding, and their designs tended to be more elongated.
The #750EF Plume Gauloise was an English manufacturer's attempt to offer French writers their preferred style of pen, but with English steel and pen-manufacturing expertise, which at the time were both the world's best. It's a lovely pen, thoroughly hand-ground, with a tapered tip and a fluted waist. Very smooth, with plenty of line variation, it's an excellent pen for any country.
This is a vintage dip pen, made about 90 years ago. Thanks to the protective coating applied to all dip pens (even new ones produced today), they are in excellent vintage condition. They've been checked for rust and other defects by our experts and are ready to return to service on your desk.
As with any dip pen, you will need to remove the protective coating so that ink will stick to the nib consistently. To remove the coating, simply dip your new pen in ink a couple of times and wipe it off. Repeat until the ink coats the nib completely and doesn't bead up. This process takes about 15 seconds and only needs to be done once, before you use the pen for the first time.
