When preparing a raw canvas for oil painting, the first step is a coat of PVA Size. Since oil grounds and colors can damage canvas over time, this is a crucial technique for archival-quality painting. Traditionally, painters used rabbit skin glue for this initial primer, but PVA Size has all the same benefits without any harm to animals.
Another interesting use for PVA Size: it can be used as your only primer! This thin, low-viscosity sizing does not fill in the natural texture of the canvas, so for painters who love the raw-canvas look, two coats of PVA can protect the fabric while preserving its texture.
PVA Size can also be used to prepare watercolor and mixed media papers for oil painting. It hardly changes the appearance of the paper, so you can choose an attractive substrate and apply PVA Size to protect it.
