Made around 1920 and finished in smooth, shiny chrome, the Excelsior Silver Bank Pen #11 is a rarely-seen vintage nib from a small importer in Pittsburgh. Made in England by one of the big steel pen houses, then stamped with the importer's brand and sold in the U.S. market, the Sloan Excelsior #11 dip pen was a high-quality nib with a longer-than-average route to the consumer.
Flexible but requiring a firm touch for line variation, the Excelsior #11 works for a wide range of drawing, writing, calligraphy, cartooning, and hand-lettering projects. Capable of small lettering and larger, more dynamic script, this is a distinctive and well-made pen with a versatile design.
As with any dip pen, you will need to remove the protective coating so that ink will stick to the nib consistently. To remove the coating, simply dip your new pen in ink a couple of times and wipe it off. Repeat until the ink coats the nib completely and doesn't bead up. This process takes about 15 seconds and only needs to be done once, before you use the pen for the first time.
