Tom Norton Walnut Ink

Tom Norton Walnut Ink is a lovely, highly fluid brown ink that can be used with brushes or dip pens, for drawing, calligraphy, or watercolor. It's fully water-soluble, so feel free to mix it with water or lift it with a wet brush for subtle toning and shading. And unlike traditional walnut ink, Tom Norton is made with modern pigments that are completely lightfast. It won't fade like ink made from natural walnuts, but it has the same cool brown tone you know and love from the drawings of the Old Masters.

To create dark, rich tones, we recommend applying Tom Norton Walnut Ink in multiple layers. Layering is especially useful for giving complexity and depth to drawings made with just one color.

For even more intensity, add a few drops of the special Darkening Medium to your Tom Norton Walnut Ink. The Darkening Medium is a much more concentrated version of the same pigmented, water-soluble ink, so it can even be used on its own for ultra-dark browns.
