Horadam Watercolors, Random Grey 2022, 15 mL

Made from the mixed pigments left over from manufacturing other colors, Schmincke Horadam Random Grey reduces waste and increases shadow serendipity. Every tube (really, even every squeeze) of Random Grey is a bit different, because the pigment mixture used to make it isn't totally uniform.

In concept, it sounds like a difficult color to paint with, but we found quite the opposite in our tests. Because it's made from colors across the spectrum, the overall effect is neutral grey. But when you apply it with more water, Random Grey opens up to reveal pockets of cool and warm pigment against a warm grey undertone. It's very nice for shadows and textured near-neutral areas in your painting.
